Brief Introduction
Laurence Burger’s legal practice focuses mainly on international dispute resolution in investment and commercial arbitration. She has considerable experience representing parties in arbitral proceedings and has often been appointed to act as sole arbitrator, president or as a member of an arbitral tribunal. Laurence also advises a wide variety of clients in various economic fields such as banking and finance, oil and gas, defense, information technology, sports, telecoms, construction, pharmaceuticals, shipping and the food and beverage industry on issues of Swiss commercial law and corporations. Laurence studied law in Fribourg, Switzerland, and graduated cum laude with a bilingual (French/German) law degree. After passing the bar exam in Geneva, Laurence obtained a DESS on Alternative Dispute Resolution from the University Paris II-Assas. She then fully immersed herself in the common law obtaining a JD and a LLM degree from Columbia University School of Law. Her skills as an international litigator and arbitration practitioner were first honed while working as a junior associate for 3.5 years in the litigation department of Hughes Hubbard & Reed in New York. She then joined the arbitration department of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Paris where she was given increased responsibility in handling numerous complex investment and commercial arbitration cases. Laurence moved back to Geneva in 2007 where she has been developing further her international arbitration practice. Fully trained and qualified as a Swiss and American lawyer, Laurence is ideally qualified to understand and deal with the complexities of transnational procedural and substantive issues that arise in international commercial disputes. In advising her clients Laurence draws from her extensive knowledge of both common and civil law to offer them coherent and fully integrated solutions.Laurence also advises clients in Swiss law in non-contentious matters.
