Brief Introduction
Dr. Masako Miyatake has been practicing law in Japan since 2002, and has taught Negotiation, Mediation and Arbitration and Ombudsman as a professor of Keio University Law School until retiring that position in March 2024 and is now serving as a guest professor there. Dr. Miyatake had Master and Ph.D. of Business Law at the Graduate School of Law, Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, Japan and LL.M. at Columbia Law School, New York, U.S.A.
Dr. Miyatake has devoted herself to various types of dispute resolutions from preventive methods of disputes in workplace including organizational ombudsman, mediation, conciliation, arbitration and litigation not only in Japan but also in the U.S. She has been exploring what is the best way to solve what type of disputes from disputants’ perspectives. She believes it is critical to build the rapport between dispute resolution practices and academics, which would contribute to the progress of the dispute resolution theories and practices interactively.
Dr. Miyatake’s career includes an internship in US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, observations of mediation cases in New York Peace Institute, Community Conference Center in Baltimore, Maryland and at US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, as well as at Korea Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB) and Singapore International Arbitration Center (SIAC) for arbitrations. Currently a mediator of Tokyo Family Court, a reconciliator of Dispute Reconciliation Center for Nuclear Damage Compensation regarding Fukushima Nuclear Plant, a conciliator/arbitrator of Daini Tokyo Bar Association ADR Center, and listed as a registered lawyer for Hague Convention. Fellow of CIArb and CIArb Accredited Mediator. Panel of Arbitrators at KCAB, Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (JCAA), Japan Sports Arbitration Agency (JSAA) and Beijing Arbitration Committee (BAC). Panel of Mediators at Singapore International Mediation Center (SIMC), Japan International Mediation Center (JIMC) and JCAA. Also serving as an ombudsperson at Kyushu Institute of Technology since 2021. Dr. Miyatake’s mediation settlement rate has exceeded approximately 85% among in around 100 cases so far.
