Mevelyn Ong is a Counsel at Sidley Austin, currently based in Hong Kong. Prior to relocating to Hong Kong last year, she was based in New York for the majority of her legal career. She advises on (i) international arbitration and (ii) U.S. sanctions/regulatory investigations. Mevelyn has represented clients around the world from diverse industry sectors (particularly conglomerate manufacturing, financial services, private equity, technology, and mining/energy), in international commercial and investor-state arbitrations and mediations administered under the major arbitral rules, as well as conducted on an ad hoc basis. Mevelyn has additionally represented multinational companies and financial institutions in conducting internal investigations and in defense against multi-jurisdictional regulatory investigations brought by U.S., UK, and other governmental authorities concerning alleged violations of U.S. sanctions, money laundering, bribery, terrorism financing, and other U.S. government regulations. Mevelyn has especial experience and interest in international disputes that implicate issues of political risk, transnational criminality and international investment law. She has presented at conferences and authored award-winning publications in these areas. She holds degrees in law and politics with highest honours from Columbia University (U.S.), Queen Mary University of London (U.K.) and the University of Melbourne (Australia).
